SUMMARY:Summer School on Socioeconomic Opportunity and Inequality with the Dondena Centre for Research on Social Dynamics and Public Policy
DESCRIPTION:The Summer School on Socioeconomic Opportunity and Inequality seeks to provide the next generation of scholars with the multidisciplinary underpinning necessary for effective research on inequality dynamics. It will feature leading scholars tackling inequality research from the lens of economics\, sociology\, and public policy\, to foster cross-disciplinary approaches to inequality research and public policy evaluation regarding long-term inequality issues. It will also train advanced M.A. and Ph.D. students\, policy professionals\, and early-career faculty through immersive lectures on state-of-the-art methods for inequality research\, one-on-one and small-group meetings with senior researchers\, and presentation opportunities for summer school students where they can receive input on their early-stage research from the research community. The summer schools are designed to yield long-term benefits in creating lasting intellectual links that can be pursued long after the conclusion of the meetings.\n\n\n\n\nInequality and the SUMMARY:Capitalism’s Legal Regime
DESCRIPTION:How do legal systems shape capitalism and the creation of wealth? Join us for a thought-provoking conversation with Katharina Pistor\, a leading scholar of law\, property rights\, and corporate governance\, to explore this question. \nOften described as an economic system\, capitalism\, Pistor argues\, is fundamentally a legal regime. Her latest book\, The Law of Capitalism and How to Transform It\, reveals how laws governing property\, contracts\, corporations\, and finance convert assets\, promises\, and ideas into capital. She posits that this system generates unprecedented wealth\, contributing to increasing inequality while simultaneously straining social and political cohesion and challenging democratic governance. \nPistor will be joined by Steven Durlauf\, founding director of the Stone Center for Research on Wealth Inequality and Mobility\, and Damon Jones\, the Center’s Associate Director. \nDurlauf\, whose work focuses on inequality and intergenerational mobility\, will share insights into how economic structures shape opportunity and wealth. Jones\, whose research spans tax policy\, household finance\, and labor economics\, will illuminate how legal and administrative complexity contributes to unequal outcomes. \nThe conversation will be moderated by Jacob Goldin\, Richard M. Lipton Professor\, a leading scholar of tax law and administrative systems whose research examines how taxation structures shape outcomes for low-income households across groups. \nThis event offers a valuable opportunity to engage with pressing questions about capitalism\, inequality\, and the legal and policy changes needed to build a more just and sustainable economic future. \nSchedule\n\n\n\nStart Time\nEnd Time\nSession\nSession Leader(s)\n\n\n\n\n4:30 p.m.\n5:00 p.m.\nRegistration\n\n\n\n5:00 p.m.\n6:30 p.m.\nDiscussion\nModerator: Jacob Goldin \nPanelists: \nKatharina Pistor \nSteven Durlauf \nDamon Jones\n\n\n6:30 p.m.\n7:30 p.m.\nReception\n\n\n\n\n
