Book Talk on The Inequality of Wealth by Liam Byrne

Since the Great Recession of 2008-10, the number of billionaires in the world has more than doubled. In Britain and the U.S., wealth continues accumulating for the top one percent, while remaining stagnant for working-class families. In his book, The Inequality of Wealth, Member of Parliament Liam Byrne explores how these differing trends in wealth affect the economy and democratic governance. He argues that wealth inequality underpins every kind of disparity and that it erodes meritocracy and democracy. He offers lessons from his political career to advocate for economic security and independence for working-class families as the key to individual freedom and meaningful democratic participation. Professor Steven Durlauf, Director of the Stone Center, and Member of British Parliament Liam Byrne conversed about wealth and the future of democracy, moderated by Ethan Bueno De Mesquita, Dean of the Harris School.
