Alexander Monge-Naranjo

Alexander Monge-Naranjo received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1999. He is a Professor of Economics who joined the European University Institute in 2021. He has also held positions at Northwestern University, Penn State, INCAE Business School, and visiting positions at the University of Tokyo, Goethe University in Frankfurt and Universidad de Chile. His research is on human capital and its role in macroeconomic outcomes and income distribution, including structural transformation, misallocation of resources, growth and international trade and investment. His work has been published in Econometrica, American Economic Review and Quarterly Journal of Economics among other leading journals.

In his published and ongoing work, Monge-Naranjo have examined college choices and the related financing and repayment decisions. He also have examined how human capital decisions and outcomes shape up the aggregate income of countries and its income distribution, as well as the occupation choices of individuals and households. He have also studied how human capital drives the structural transformation and the urban development of countries as well as the international reallocation of factors in the world economy.

Currently, Monge-Naranjo has a very active working agenda focusing on the following topics: (1) education opportunities, intergenerational mobility and the development path of countries; (2) technological changes and the dynamic implications for occupation choices, aggregate income, and income distribution; (3) industrial revolutions and the emerge of global imbalances; and (4) optimal policies for developing countries for the attraction of foreign know-how.
