Summary

Albert F. Park, expert on economic development in China, visited the Stone Center on January 4-6, 2023 and April 21, 2023 to collaborate with Faculty Director Steven Durlauf and Postdoctoral Scholar Kristina Butaeva on a comparison study of intergenerational social mobility in China and Russia. In this project, they emphasized the role and specifics of intergenerational mobility analysis in transition economies. They claimed that the standard measures of intergenerational mobility could lead to misleading conclusions studying the economies that experienced large structural changes. Their paper employed a new measure capturing the difference between structural and exchange mobility to examine educational and occupational intergenerational mobility in China and Russia. They also demonstrated that the proposed method works for developed economies (studying the United States) and can improve the overall efficiency of cross-country comparisons of scales and trends in intergenerational mobility.
