Summary

Ph.D. student, Dmitry Rudenko visited Stone Center from March 25 to June 2, 2024 to collaborate on research projects related to poverty and the health outcomes of children in Russia. The primary objective of the study was to examine the extent to which children in impoverished households experience inferior health outcomes compared to children whose parents do not face financial hardship.

The study utilized data from the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS) spanning from 2000 to 2021 to create a dataset linking child-year outcomes to various parental and family-level variables. The findings reveal a negative impact of household poverty status on child health: children from poor families are approximately 0.5 standard deviations shorter. However, the causal effect of poverty on subjective child health and obesity is relatively smaller. The study suggests the need for further research on intergenerational health mobility in Russia and other transition economies.
