Kim Pernell is an economic and organizational sociologist. She studies the social causes of changing behavior in banking and financial systems and the social consequences of these changes. Her recent book, Visions of Financial Order (2024, Princeton University Press), explains how national institutions gave rise to more and less effective systems of financial regulation. Current projects examine how recent developments in the American financial system have contributed to inequalities in privately held business ownership and to the cost and quality of childcare.
